Running time: 80 minutes

Reel Causes is thrilled to host the second annual Common Threads event, a program of locally-made short filmsThe anchor for this event is the incredible, inspirational and complex works of Intersections Media Opportunities for Youth, including the delightful collection of animated shorts Messages to Younger Selvesincluding films by Justine – Juliette Grindley, Kayla Reid, Aaron Clark, Jacob Sexsmith, Eli Terlson and many others. At times clever, heartbreaking and often landing very close to home, these gems remind us how resilient the human spirit can be.

We are also pleased to announce we will have a special Preview Screening of Trish Neufeld’s documentary film Save Space Nugget. The film documents the story of a determined Vancouver Island community who came together to save their forest from the landowners who intended to harvest it for profit, and in doing so created a new future for their community. It’s a David and Goliath story with inspiring personal tales about what can be achieved when people take action, and sometimes great personal risks, to achieve a common goal.

The Cause

Intersections Media Opportunities for Youth Society

Intersections Media Opportunities for Youth Society is a non-profit charitable organization founded by the late Bill Vince, an Oscar-nominated Vancouver filmmaker, and advocate for youth at risk. Their program offers a digital media and life skills workshop and work experience opportunity to youth facing multiple barriers to employment. Through the unique and familiar medium of art and digital filmmaking as well as involvement in group-based projects, Intersections participants gain the experience and confidence for long-term attachment to the workforce. Bill’s life is our ongoing inspiration and our programming is his legacy. Bill believed in the potential of youth and the power of helping others help themselves. There are many ways in which you or your organization can become involved with helping Intersections, including equipment or funding donations, and work experience placements.
