We Can BC
About the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:
On December 6th, 1989 fourteen women were murdered at École Polytechnique in Montréal; targeted solely because of their gender. Two years later, Parliament passed a Bill confirming that Canada will commemorate a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women every December 6th.
The Cause:
We Can BC is part of an international social movement to change attitudes and behaviour to end gender-based violence.
Violence against women is both a violation of human rights and an impediment to achieving gender equality. Yet in many communities across British Columbia, just as in the rest of Canada and the world, violence against women is accepted as ‘normal behaviour’. It is only by challenging these perceptions of ‘normalcy’ that we can bring about change. We Can BC is working to shift beliefs and attitudes surrounding violence against women — and in doing so, change behaviour and make our communities safer for everyone.
We Can BC is thrilled to be a part of Prevent It! this year, as part of its ongoing efforts to change attitudes and behaviour to end all violence against women.
